In their early years, children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for – and this all starts with the adults surrounding them. That’s why at Jelly Bean Junction Learning Centers, we strive to hire only the most passionate individuals to lead in and out of the classroom. Our Director of Educational Development and Funding, Terri Tarvin, is a perfect representation of this. Having been a part of the Jelly Bean family for over 18 years, Terri has played a pivotal role in shaping the experiences of both our students and teachers in our Cincinnati centers. Recently, we sat down with her to discuss her journey over the last two decades and what keeps her motivated year after year.
What inspired you to join Jelly Bean Junction? And what has kept you here all these years?
“Prior to joining Jelly Bean, I was actually in the accounting field, but my sister and children all worked for Jelly Bean. I love kids, so I decided ‘why not join the team?”. Since that decision, I've never looked back – the children and relationships keep me here. If you are having a difficult day, it doesn’t take much for one of the kids to put a smile on your face. Watching them grow and become individuals is extremely rewarding.”
We understand that your role at JBJ is instrumental for obtaining necessary grants and funding - why is that important and how do those grants add value for the families at JBJ?
“The grants provide us with extra funds needed to purchase additional items for the classroom or upgrade items in the classrooms. We, of course, always have the necessary toys and items needed for classrooms, but the funds help to replace items as needed. The grant monies can also help with teacher bonuses, new toys, diaper changers, and even air conditioning units. It supplements what Jelly Bean Junction already provides and ultimately allows our teachers to focus more time on the students in their classrooms and deliver the best value for our families.”
What qualities do you look for when hiring teachers and caregivers at Jelly Bean Junction?
“More often than not, you can tell a great teacher apart by how children respond to them. When teachers truly love what they do, children can feel it. These teachers bring patience, positivity, and creativity into each day. As a result, the children in their care become more confident, and learning becomes something they look forward to. We also, of course, look at their background, including what their education is, knowledge on development, and how they can handle behavioral situations. However, we don’t always rely on having a degree; there are great educators who may not have a degree but have been in the field for 20 years, know a lot about childcare, and are great with the kids.”
How have you seen early childhood education evolve during your time?
"When I first started in this space, kids tended to play more independently and spent a lot of time outdoors, learning through exploration. Today, teachers take a more hands-on approach, especially when it comes to helping children build social and emotional skills. Independence comes a little later now, and we’re more intentional about guiding them through those early stages of development.”
What do you think makes Jelly Bean Junction different from other childcare centers in the community?
“Our teachers are our differentiators. Learning begins with strong relationships, and our teachers build those relationships with their students and families, taking time to really get to know them. Because of this, our teachers take notice of and celebrate even the smallest milestones. We also pay our teachers very competitively. Families who join us are our own ‘family’ in a way. Our teachers love their students.”
How do you support families during big transitions, like starting preschool or adjusting after summer break?
“There’s a lot that we do our best to make transitions as smooth as possible for both children and parents. Small examples include taking our preschoolers to visit the school bus, so they know what to expect when they head off to elementary school. In our infant rooms, we help prepare little ones for their next step by introducing open cups before they move up to the toddler room. I could go on about the ways we help both children and their families feel comfortable and confident as they grow."
How do you see children benefit most from Jelly Bean Junction’s play-based and creative learning approach?
“Kids are far more interested in what is being taught if it is based on their interests. For instance, we have a gravel company close to one of our centers; the kids see the big bulldozers and may want to learn about the equipment. The teachers could change the entire lesson plan and pivot to learn about big machines. Sometimes the teachers are able to change plans that day, especially in younger rooms, but if not, they will work the lesson into another day. The teachers are always ready to switch things up if kids are not interested. When you teach from the children’s interests, they learn better.”
What advice would you give to parents who are nervous about choosing the right childcare center for their child?
“When I do tours with potential new families, especially if they have never been to a center, I give them information to research and look at all centers in the area. This way they can compare apples to apples. Another center might be a beautiful building, but they might be over ratio with teachers to children. Parents should leave a center feeling very comfortable, knowing they will take care of your child."
Can you share a favorite memory or story from your years at the center?
“I am a very loud speaker, and once, I was in a classroom, and a child asked for my name. I replied that my name was Ms. Terri, and the child said, "You smell good, Ms. Terri, but you’re very loud." That definitely put a smile on my face.”
What else can you tell us about Jelly Bean Junction Learning Center?
“Just that Jelly Bean truly feels like a family rather than a program.”
