The Importance of Outdoor Play

There's something magical about playing outside as a kid. Whether it’s exploring a playground, drawing with chalk, or chasing friends in a good old-fashioned game of tag, outdoor play is simply good for the soul...and for a child’s growth and development.

Supporting Whole-Child Development Through Outdoor Play

It’s easy to think the biggest benefits of outdoor time for young children are simply burning off energy and getting their daily dose of vitamin D. While those certainly matter, time spent outside also supports development in ways indoor play can’t fully replicate. Here are a few key reasons we prioritize outdoor play in our daily curriculum for the children in our care:

It Builds Perceptual- and Gross-Motor Skills

When kids are outside, they naturally move their bodies in bigger, more dynamic ways. Swinging on a swing encourages them to use their c ore and leg muscles as they learn to pump back and forth. Playing catch or kicking a ball helps develop strength, coordination, and balance...essential building blocks for lifelong physical health. And when these movements become part of their everyday routine, they support not only physical growth but also confidence in how their bodies move and what they can do.

Outdoor play also helps children build body awareness and understand how they move through space as they explore different speeds, directions, and movements. Whether they’re standing on top of a hill or lying in the grass looking up at the sky, these new perspectives encourage curiosity, confidence, and a deeper connection to the world around them.

It Inspires Creativity and Imagination

Being outside opens the door to all kinds of unstructured play, giving kids the freedom to let their imaginations run wild and direct their own activities. This kind of free play helps children learn important concepts at their own pace, including cause and effect, problem-solving, and decision-making.

It Encourages Socialization

Outdoor play also gives children a chance to practice social and emotional skills with other kids in a different environment. Taking turns on a slide, working together to build something, or following the rules of a game all give children the chance to practice communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution in real time.

It’s a Powerful Form of Sensory Play

Sensory play plays an important role in cognitive development and emotional regulation, and no environment is more sensory-rich than the great outdoors. Outside, children can see small animals, birds, plants, and trees; smell flowers or fresh-cut grass; hear birds chirping; feel the wind or the texture of bark on a tree; and even taste falling snow or rain. These experiences help kids build important connections in the brain, while also encouraging curiosity, focus, and discovery through play.

Prioritizing Outdoor Play at Jelly Bean Junction

At Jelly Bean Junction, outdoor play is one of the many ways we nurture the whole child through hands-on learning and exploration. Each of our childcare centers features safe outdoor play areas, and whenever possible, we incorporate outdoor time into our daily curriculum to encourage movement, creativity, and discovery.
